Tips for keeping safe.
Cairns is a paradise for animal lovers, but alongside the cute and cuddly creatures, there are some wild locals you need to be a bit more cautious around. With your smarts and a few tips and trips from locals like us, you'll be exploring Australia’s wildlife safely like a pro!
Whether it’s the towering cassowary or the sneaky saltwater crocodile, here’s what you need to know to enjoy Cairns without any unexpected critter encounters.

Saltwater Crocodiles ("salties")
These prehistoric predators are master ambush hunters – fast, strong, and kind of terrifying! "Salties" love hanging out in rivers, estuaries, and sometimes even on beaches. Often mistaken for large driftwood, these guys are great at stealth. Play it safe and take heed of croc warning signs.

Snakes
Cairns has its fair share of slithery residents, including venomous snakes like the Eastern Brown Snake and Taipan. But no need to freak out! Snakes are usually just as keen to avoid you as you are them. If you see a snake, keep your eyes on it and back away slowly.

Spiders
Australia is home to some pretty creepy looking eight-legged friends - looking at you Funnel-Web and Redback - but bites are super rare. Mostly found in woodpiles, but occasionally shoes left outside overnight, give any outdoor kicks a good bash upside down before putting them on ... just in case.

Box Jellyfish and Irukandji
If you’re heading for a swim, be aware of Box Jellyfish and Irukandji which can be found in the coastal waters around Cairns, especially during stinger season (November to May). Most of the popular beaches have stinger nets patrolled by lifeguards and you can also get yourself a stinger suit for extra precaution.

Cassowaries
The Southern Cassowary is an absolutely stunning (and slightly intimidating) giant bird that roams the rainforests around Cairns. Due to their size, strength and claws, they can be dangerous if they feel threatened. So if you're lucky enough to see one, stay back and admire from afar.
Dangerous encounters with these magnificent creatures are rare. Australia's natural wonders and vibrant wildlife all contribute to making it a see-it-to-belive-it destination.
