Run/Walk

For a truly Melbourne experience, get yourself down to The Tan - a 3.8km purpose-built walking/running track surrounding Melbourne’s beautiful Botanic Gardens (hence the nickname). Enjoyed by everyone from social walkers to some of Australia’s best athletes (plenty of AFL and AFLW spotting here!), this is an iconic Melbourne experience right on the edge of the CBD.
You’ll stroll by the Yarra, glimpse Government House and experience the quiet monument that is the Shrine of Remembrance – an iconic landmark honouring the sacrifices of those who have served in both war and peacekeeping operations.
If your main mission is calorie burning, you’ll want to take on the challenge of Anderson Street hill – a short but intense 500m climb which will test both your endurance and leg strength.
Or for a more leisurely experience, take a scenic detour through the Botanic Gardens and see stunning foliage and bursts of colour (you’ll want to bring your camera), sit down and take in the lake over a glass of bubbles or cup of tea.
Cheap Eats
Drop into Lentil as Anything, a community-driven, feel-good experience that operates on a pay-as-you-feel model, which means you can enjoy hearty, wholesome vegetarian and vegan meals without any set price tags. The menu changes daily, but you can expect soul-warming curries, vibrant salads, and house-made treats that celebrate global flavours. Your donations and patronage help keep the initiative going.
The CBD is chock-full of cheap and friendly places to eat but Crossways Vegetarian and Vegan offers a $9.50 all you can eat buffet that can’t be beat.

Melbourne is home to the largest population of Italians outside of Italy, and Lygon St is the beating heart of the culinary centre. Filled with hearty, Italian fare that’s easy on the hip pocket and generous with the portions, make sure you save room for gelati.
